About The Environment Program

Kresge’s Environment Program helps cities combat and adapt to climate change while advancing racial and economic justice. We believe that cities should work on limiting climate change and preparing for its effects at the same time.

Climate change hits some communities harder than others. The pollution that creates dangerous heat waves and severe storms causes the most harm in neighborhoods where people have lower incomes and in communities of color. That’s why we focus on making sure these community voices lead climate decisions—from city halls to state capitals to Washington, D.C.

When leaders at all levels of government think about climate change as they plan new infrastructure, decide how land gets used, and make other big decisions, they can help their communities both reduce climate change and get ready for its impacts.

We support efforts to:

• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
• Prepare for the effects of climate change that cannot be avoided
• Advance social cohesion and equity
