How We Operate

Transparency and Accountability

Kresge seeks to be a transparent organization and has achieved Candid’s gold transparency designation for sharing specific information about our foundation, including staff and trustee demographic data. On Kresge.org, we also share thorough details about our grantmaking and social investments. In addition, we publish annual tax returns and financial statements, our bylaws, code of conduct, whistleblower and conflict of interest policies on our website. Staff and trustees are required to submit an annual conflict of interest statement and affirm adherence to the foundation’s code of conduct.

Commitment to the Environment

We promote environmental responsibility through our philanthropic activities, staff education and environmental awareness. We also employ a variety of practices to conserve resources and preserve energy throughout our workspaces.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Integral to our six values is our commitment to the diversity of staff and trustees. We seek to engage, understand, and lift up a variety of voices and experiences. Diversity represents our various and varied identities and differences, both collectively and as individuals. Read more about our DEI policy here.

Financials

We post our audited financial statements and tax returns as they become available. Financial statements are typically posted in mid-June; the 990-PF that we file with the IRS is typically posted in mid-November. View past financial statements and tax returns.

Investment Office

Our primary investment objective is to preserve and grow our endowment into perpetuity by making strategic investments that generate returns in excess of our annual grants, social investments, administrative spending and inflation.

Financial Controls and Accountability

Deloitte & Touche LLP is our independent auditor. The Board of Trustees Audit Committee reviews the results of the independent auditor’s examinations and recommends them to the full Board of Trustees for approval. The Audit Committee also reviews the annual operating plan.

Our Workspaces

The Kresge Foundation is based in Troy, Michigan, at the historic former site of the 19th-century Brooks Farm. Our main headquarters consists of an original 1852 farmhouse and barn juxtaposed with a modern aluminum-and-glass office building. We are committed to environmental sustainability in our workspaces.
