2020 COVID-19 resources from our partners and community

COVID-19, General Foundation News

COVID-19 affected all of us, including the organizations with which we partner. We compiled this information from our grantees and partners in spring 2020   It is no longer being updated. For all up-to-date, basic information about the virus, including how to protect yourself and recognize symptoms and get vaccinated, please refer to the CDC and National Institutes of Health websites.

American Cities Resources

Memphis-based resources

The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis Foundation is hosting the Mid-South COVID-19 Regional Response Fund. The fund provides flexible funding to organizations serving community members who have been impacted by the coronavirus and the economic consequences of the pandemic in West Tennessee, eastern Arkansas, and northern Mississippi.

Pathway Lending is providing accessible, affordable loans to help small businesses in Tennessee restart operations following interruptions from COVID-19. Funds can cover expenses to resume operations, including inventory, working capital, payroll and other mobilization expenses. Applicants must submit a Restart Plan outlining how they will spend the funds they request.

KIP:M grantee Communities Unlimited has compiled information helpful to small businesses or smaller organizations, “Because Your Business Can’t Wear a Mask,”  and an FAQ on the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (Families First Act).

New Orleans-based resources

The Greater New Orleans Foundation has activated a disaster response and restoration fund to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more about the fund here. The GNOF has also launched the Louisiana Service and Hospitality Family Assistance Program, an initiative to support negatively impacted Louisiana service and hospitality workers who are supporting their dependent children and elderly parents and need help to continue meeting their basic needs during the coronavirus pandemic.

New Orleans Business Alliance is setting up a relief fund for gig economy workers who are suffering a loss of income because of the public health crisis. They have also compiled a list of COVID-19 resources for New Orleans residents and businesses.

The Cowen Institute at Tulane University has a round-up of free resources for New Orleans-based educators and families. Check them out here.

Arts & Culture resources

Creative Capital has created a list of resources during the COVID-19 pandemic for artists working in all disciplines, arts philanthropists and arts professionals.

Grantmakers In the Arts produced a comprehensive list of resources and guidance regarding artist support during COVID-19 from networks in both the arts sector and beyond.  A recording of GIA’s webinar Emergency Preparedness and Response: COVID19 and the arts ecosystem is available online. You can find a pdf of the slide deck here.

The League of American Orchestras has assembled resources relating to coronavirus for those in the arts sector.

Americans for the Arts has gathered key updates, resources, and pertinent information for the Arts & Culture sector in response to the Coronavirus including funding and grant resources, an impact survey, helpful articles, and more.  The organization is also providing a free self-guided online course: Artists at the Community Development Table,  which includes a webinar-based teaching component, worksheets, quizzes and resources for arts-based community development.

Our Culture of Justice partner Performing Statistics, a cultural organizing project that uses art to model, imagine and reform the criminal justice system, has compiled a COVID-19 response that includes a list of resources, statements and actions for youth and their families.

Springboard for the Arts has developed a list of Coronavirus Resources for Artists, Creative Workers & Organizations.

The Center for Cultural Innovation has developed a list of Emergency Resources for Artists and Freelancers. The list is being consistently updated to support artists and their families.

Detroit resources

Nonprofits are among the businesses that can access low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration under a statewide Economic Injury Disaster Loan declaration requested by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. You can get information on SBA coronavirus relief options and SBA disaster loans. The Michigan Small Business Relief Program has grants and loans to support businesses facing drastic reductions in cash flow and their workforces. The Michigan Small Business Development Center can also provide resources for small businesses impacted by COVID-19. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. has a list of resources and information for Michigan businesses during the COVID-19 outbreak including support programs and resources for reopening.

The City of Detroit has created an extensive set of resources for individuals and groups confronting the crisis. The list includes information on free meals for children and seniors, groceries for families, information for restaurants seeking to donate food, water restart plans, homeless shelters, the TechTown Small Business Stabilization Fund, homeowner tax assistance extensions, relief and emergency funds for artists and how to claim unemployment benefits.

Michigan Community Resources has developed a linked resource reference for nonprofits and community-based organizations on the legal, regulatory, and commercial implications of the COVID-19 Coronavirus. MCR is also offering free legal support through legal clinincs for nonprofits and small businesses to address issues arising from the pandemic.

Kresge Detroit Program partner CultureSource has compiled a compendium of sources for freelance artists. It has resources for freelancers and would be relevant to those working inside or outside of Detroit. See it here. 

Detroit College Access Network has started a Google spreadsheet “Detroit-based COVID-19 Mutual Aid” to track local resources available to students and Detroit area residents for housing, food, health care and more.

Detroit Public TV has assembled resources for parents and caregivers, educators and children. The resources range from informational videos to how to talk to children about social distancing, healthy practices and other timely concerns.  Check them out here.

While arts organizations are being separated from their physical audiences, some are putting extra efforts into connecting virtually. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, for instance, is making its hundreds of archived DSO Replay webcasts  – normally a donor benefit – available for free in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Meanwhile, the Carr Center is letting online viewers watch past concerts produced in conjunction with Detroit Public Television. Included are performances by the late Geri Allen and the late Kresge Eminent Artist Marcus Belgrave.

Education resources

The National College Attainment Network has compiled a roundup of resources to help support and guide your work with students and families who are being affected by COVID-19 in disproportionate ways.

The Michigan College Access Network has created a repository of COVID-19 resources for college access and attainment professionals: COVID-19 Resources for College Access Professionals.

The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice has put together “Beyond the Food Pantry: Supporting #RealCollege Students During COVID19. 

Swipe out Hunger, a nonprofit focused on diverting unused meal swipes for students experiencing food insecurity, has compiled resources to help ensure students’ basic needs are met during the COVID-19 response.

SchoolHouse Connection has created a page of resources on COVID19 and homelessness that includes strategies for schools, early learning programs and higher education institutions.

Veterans Education Success published an important resource for veterans during Coronavirus, covering everything from mental health resources to emergency financial help, to how to handle student loans, to how to keep kids occupied at home.

The Steve Fund created a resource page with tips to help young people and their caregivers cope and remain grounded in the midst of the challenge that coronavirus presents to our entire society. They also have a system for young people of color to access crisis counselors. They can TEXT STEVE to 741741 to access a culturally trained Crisis Text Line counselor.

The COVID-19 pandemic has left many students, families, and educators with questions about the current post-secondary landscape, especially access to federal aid resources. Here’s a clear, helpful Q&A from our partners at The Cowen Institute at Tulane University.

A new tool from Savi can help federal student loan borrowers impacted by COVID-19 learn how to reduce or eliminate payments, and access federal income-driven repayment plans.

Environment resources

The Urban Systems Lab has developed a list of resources, interactive maps, and new analysis on the impacts of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities, and the interdependent risks of COVID-19 and climate. The site is being updated regularly with key research, datasets, and relevant articles.

The Center for Community Investment has released the following guide: Reimagining Strategy in Context of the COVID-19 Crisis: A Triage Tool. It includes a sample tool, a blank tool template, and instructions for facilitating group use of the tool.

Harvard C-CHANGE conducted a webinar outlining the current understanding of connections between COVID-19, climate change, and public health. Read C-CHANGE’s answers to some of the most common questions.

GreenFaith: Interfaith Partners for Actions and the Earth is hosting faith community calls for care and resilience on Facebook Live to discuss COVID-19’s impact on climate change. Join religious leaders  for 30 minutes of reflection, mutual aid and solace.

During this time of social distancing and self quarantine, Island Press has developed a list of free webinars, 16 free e-books and excerpts, encouraging those who work in the sustainability and environment sector to keep learning.

Health resources

The American Public Health Association and the National Academy of Medicine are hosting a webinar series called “COVID-19 Conversations.”

The American Public Health Association has compiled a comprehensive list of health links and resources of information for the public health community as it speaks out for funding and support to respond to the outbreak. Find the latest guidance and information here.  Plus information on how to protect yourself from COVID-19.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have compiled a list of resources related to COVID-19 that includes information on studies and workshops on pandemic infectious disease.

Grantmakers in Health has compiled a page of general resources for health funders and resources for philanthropy that includes webinars, articles, blog posts and other resources. Check them out here.

Public Health Institute has created a list of resources for COVID-19 response by health and public health professionals. Check PHI’s response and resources here.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition has created a page for resources and news on the Coronavirus and Housing/Homelessness, including: webinars, congressional recommendations, national updates, and more.

Grounded Solutions Network has published a page with information about resources, services and programs to support organizations working on critical affordable housing-related relief efforts.

Human Services resources

Ascend at the Aspen Institute launched a new 2Gen COVID-19 response webinar series that will highlight real time issues, insights, innovations impacting and children, parents and families.

The Alliance for Strong Families and Communities has launched a new series of webinars and an online discussion forum for community-based human services organizations to discuss the potential health impact and business disruptions as a result of COVID-19.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition has created a page for resources and news on the Coronavirus and housing/homelessness. It includes webinars, congressional recommendations, national updates, and more.

NACEDA has launched a webpage to help community developers and nonprofits serving low-income communities with COVID-19 resources.

SeaChange Capital Partners has published “Tough Times Call for Tough Action: A Decision Framework for Nonprofit Leaders & Boards.”  It provides suggested governance best practices in dealing with the financial ramifications of the COVID-19 crisis on nonprofits.

Social Investment Practice resources

Net Impact has created a guide for its network of chapters of up-and-coming impact investors for best practices for virtual convening and resources for social enterprises during the coronavirus pandemic.

To address the ongoing financial health repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic, the Financial Health Network has launched an online hub to help businesses, innovators, and stakeholders across industries design and implement policies and measures best suited to support the unfolding needs of their employees, customers, and communities.

CDFIs that are members of the Opportunity Finance Network will want to explore a new fund OFN has started with Google. The $125 million fund will deliver responsible financing to CDFIs to help thousands of small businesses and nonprofits hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Google will make a $5 million grant to OFN to help CDFIs to grow and build their capacity.
