Reimagining the Civic Commons – A Decade of Change: Public Space for the Common Good

American Cities

Reimagining the Civic Commons is a national initiative that uses connected public spaces to advance ambitious social, economic and environmental goals. Over the past decade, The Kresge Foundation and four partner foundations have invested in multidisciplinary teams in cities across the country, including Detroit and Memphis.

In Detroit’s Fitzgerald neighborhood, coordinated public investments have helped spark new social and economic activity. In Memphis, sites such as the Cossitt Library and Tom Lee Park show how public spaces can bring people together across lines of race and income.

Public Space for the Common Good captures lessons from 10 years of Civic Commons work and offers a roadmap for creating more connected, prosperous, resilient and equitable communities.
