Five ways funders can show up for communities facing federal policing and surveillance

Federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the National Guard and Department of Homeland Security, have been increasing their presence in cities across the country as they intensify policing and surveillance of immigrant populations. In Memphis, organizers have watched federal agents deepen surveillance of Black, Brown and low-wealth neighborhoods. A new resource from the Neighborhood Funders Group and organizers from Memphis’s Free901 Campaign lays out five ways funders can respond, including learning about 287(g) agreements between local and federal authorities to investing in cross-state coalitions and mutual aid infrastructure.
