Titled Tyree’s Time, the monograph reflects Guyton’s lifelong exploration of time in his artistic practice while marking what he declares a defining moment of his career. The publication covers more than four decades of Guyton’s artistic journey, community activism and creative innovation that have helped shape Detroit’s cultural landscape. The Kresge Eminent Artist Award recognizes a lifetime of achievement and contributions to the region’s cultural legacy. Guyton is the 18th artist to receive the Eminent Artist title. During a late-summer celebration at The Eastern, Kresge Foundation President and CEO Rip Rapson presented Guyton with the first copy of the monograph before friends, family and members of Detroit’s arts community. A special section walks through the remarkable history of The Heidelberg Project, the internationally recognized public art environment Guyton founded on Detroit’s eastside in 1986. “As much as any one individual, Tyree embodies that Detroit art energy,” Rapson said. “On Heidelberg Street he confronted the disinvestment and neglect and hostility to the city’s poor, Black neighborhoods. He harnessed rubbish to make art. He confronted demolition equipment with creativity and a rainbow of colors.” During the ceremony, Rapson praised Guyton for charting his own path forward in the face of great opposition. “It’s the story of a kid who never quite fit the mold and a young man who repeatedly chose a different path when conventional ones felt inauthentic,” Rapson said. “When school failed to ignite his imagination, he followed his instincts elsewhere. When the military, college classrooms, factory floors, and other expected routes didn’t align with his vision for himself, he kept searching.” Kresge President & CEO (left) presents the artist monograph to 2026 Eminent Artist Tyree Guyton (right) as editor Nichole Christian and art director Ed Ryan look on. In Christian’s piece for the monograph, titled “Vision on the Wind,” she writes “the timing of the Kresge award — 2026, which marks the Heidelberg Project’s 40th anniversary — sets the honor apart as both a career-defining and ‘supernatural’ achievement.” “I keep thinking about the universe and the great philosopher Plato, saying that time is just the moving image of our reality,” Guyton says. “If we just hold on, time connects everything, every dot, every lesson. That’s what this moment feels like — like someone saying, ‘Tyree Guyton, this is your reality, see how it’s all come together. All things happen at the right time.'” In addition to the monograph, the Eminent Artist Award includes an unrestricted $100,000 prize and a short documentary film directed by a local filmmaker. Guyton’s Eminent Artist film, directed by Zachary Cunningham, premiered on Detroit PBS in spring 2026. Together, the monograph, film and award celebrate a career that has challenged conventional ideas of art, transformed public space and inspired generations of artists, residents and viewers around the world. Through his work, Guyton has demonstrated how creativity can serve as a powerful force for civic expression, community resilience and neighborhood transformation.
