Christine Jacobs Share Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Email TIME named Kresge Foundation President and CEO Rip Rapson and Robin Hood CEO and Kresge Trustee Richard Buery Jr. to the second-annual 2026 TIME100 Philanthropy list, which recognizes singular figures who are shaping the future of giving. Since becoming President and CEO of the Kresge Foundation in 2006, Rapson has redefined philanthropic leadership. He transformed Kresge from a traditional capital challenge grantmaker into a national model for strategic, community-centered philanthropy. Under his leadership, Kresge has deployed more than $3 billion in grants and $600 million in impact investments, prioritizing marginalized communities and expanding opportunities in cities nationwide. Rapson championed Kresge’s unprecedented $100 million commitment to help Detroit swiftly resolve its bankruptcy. His leadership helped make Detroit’s recovery not only possible but more just, with Kresge’s investments laying the groundwork for a stronger, more equitable city in the decade that followed. Rapson’s signature drawings – detailed sketches that have appeared in White House cabinet meetings and community conversations alike – always centers people, reflecting his belief that philanthropy exists to serve local communities and the people who reside in them. As he approaches his 20th anniversary as president and CEO, Rapson is leading the way on the relocation of Kresge’s headquarters back to Detroit, a powerful testament to the foundation’s deepening commitment to the city it has helped revitalize. “There’s a widening aperture for local philanthropy to really make a difference in the ebb and flow of daily life in urban America,” Rapson said to TIME. Rapson also recently was awarded the 2025 Council on Foundations’ Distinguished Service Award, the highest individual honor bestowed by the national philanthropic membership organization. Buery was named to the list for his accomplishments as CEO of Robin Hood, New York’s largest poverty-fighting organization. Buery is a national leader fighting for the expansion of childcare and universal preschool. Buery joined the Kresge Board of Trustees in 2019. About Buery, TIME wrote: “The CEO of anti-poverty nonprofit Robin Hood since 2021, Buery, who was previously a deputy mayor of New York City, was an architect of former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Pre-K for All initiative. He has long argued that publicly funded childcare is key to combating inequality. ‘People can’t go to work if they don’t have a place for their kids to go,” he says. The full TIME100 Philanthropy list will appear in the May 25, 2026 issue of TIME, available on newsstands on Friday, May 15, and also now at ti.me/100-philanthropy.
