This grant will support predevelopment costs for expanding the Music Hall Center for Performing Arts (Music Hall) as an iconic cultural gateway to the historic Paradise Valley business and entertainment district in the former Black Bottom neighborhood. The project is a collaboration with the City of Detroit and the State of Michigan to double Music Hall performance space and musical education space and, through its architectural redesign, create an iconic entrance to honor the history of the former Black Bottom residential area that was raised for urban renewal in 1959 to establish the I-375 freeway. The Jazz Development Workshop, a Black music conservatory established in 1979 to promote and advance jazz education and mentorship, will produce a documentary film project chronicling the life and career of Marcus Belgrave, the 2009 Kresge Eminent Artist and Detroit's Jazz Master Laureate. This grant will provide project support for the Plowshares Theatre Company (PTC) to develop “Hastings Street,” an original theatrical production focused on the history and cultural narrative(s) of Detroit’s historic Black Bottom neighborhood, the predominately African-American community forcibly displaced through urban renewal policies clearing land that would become Lafayette Park and I-375. This grant supports the restoration of the historic Negro League baseball stadium in Hamtramck as a cultural asset and recreation site for metro Detroiters. The restored stadium, along with the larger recreation district and adjoined greenway, will transform mostly underutilized and vacant land into a safe and accessible place to gather, create and be active together while supporting cultural preservation, positive public health outcomes, economic opportunity, and increased quality of life.
