Expanding opportunities in America’s cities

University of the Witwatersrand

Johannesburg, South Africa

Founded in the 1920s with donations from South Africa's mining industry, "Wits" became a center of political opposition to apartheid and a pioneer in the sciences, and has produced several Nobel laureates, including Nelson Mandela and Nadine Gordimer. This five-year, $250,000 grant enables the university to continue building on fundraising and advancement efforts launched as part of our original Kresge Special Initiative in South Africa.
