Founded in the 1920s with donations from South Africa’s mining industry, “Wits” became a center of political opposition to apartheid and a scientific pioneer. It has produced several Nobel laureates, including Nelson Mandela. Wits earned this bonus grant when it met its final-year fundraising goals as part of our South Africa Philanthropy Initiative.
