We are a private, national foundation that works to expand opportunities in America’s cities through grantmaking and social investing in arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services and community development in Detroit.
This grant provides support for the At What Point Managed Retreat? Resilience Building in the Coastal Zone conference hosted by the Earth Institute’s Climate Adaptation Initiative at Columbia University. Managed retreat is the process of removing existing development – buildings, infrastructure, entire communities – and populations from coastal areas and preventing future development that cannot or will not be protected against climate hazards. This conference will advance the engagement of a diverse group of stakeholders as they work towards discovering solutions that protect communities from climate risks, reshaping their responses to changing climactic conditions in an equitable, inclusive way. This grant is consistent with the Environment Program’s interest in building the field of climate adaptation and resilience in ways that enhance equity and social cohesion.
