From 2006 to 2010 the institute, known as Inyathelo, managed the original $10.5 million Kresge Special Initiative in South Africa, which focused on building private advancement capacity at five large teaching institutions. This grant funds the third and fourth years of implementation of a second round of the program, the Kresge-Inyathelo Advancement Initiative, which promotes advancement at four South African universities through training, consulting, structural reforms, better data management, an annual conference and development of a National Advancement Survey.
