The monograph, Tyree’s Time, reflects 2026 Eminent Artist Tyree Guyton‘s lifelong exploration of time in his artistic practice while marking what he declares a defining moment of his career. The publication covers more than four decades of Guyton’s artistic journey, community activism and creative innovation that have helped shape Detroit’s cultural landscape.

In a rich collection of essays, notable writers, curators, artists and educators explore the canon of events, people, and places that informed Guyton’s iconography and artistic practice. A special section walks through the remarkable history of The Heidelberg Project, the internationally recognized public art environment Guyton founded on Detroit’s eastside in 1986. Readers will also enjoy an archive of rare photos and Guyton’s own reflections.

This publication celebrates a career that has challenged conventional ideas of art, transformed public space and inspired generations of artists, Detroit residents and viewers around the world. Through his work, Guyton has demonstrated how creativity can serve as a powerful force for civic expression, community resilience and neighborhood transformation.
