John C. Jones

HOPE Toledo

In fall 2020, Rev. John C. Jones was named HOPE Toledo president by the HOPE Toledo board, which is chaired by Wendi Huntley, Esq. As a Toledo native, Jones knows first-hand the impact quality education can make on an individual, a family and the broader community.

Prior to taking the position with HOPE Toledo, Jones served as the community liaison for ProMedica with its Social Determinants of Health office. In that role, Jones served the community through the development of mentoring programs, as well as training and placement of youth, young adults and others in the workforce. During his tenure, he also focused on education and was instrumental in developing the vision for HOPE Toledo.

Previously, Jones served as the President and CEO of the Greater Toledo Urban League. John is also an ordained minister and serves as an Associate Minister at the Christian Temple Baptist Church under the leadership and pastorate of his father, Rev. Charles E. Jones.

1. How has your personal journey influenced your approach to leadership?

I have been blessed to have my leadership directly influenced by both my grandmother (my first pastor) and my father (my current pastor). I have also been in the presence of some transformational business and corporate leaders. My journey has taken me from Toledo to an HBCU (Central State University) back to Toledo and serving within various organizations that for some were seemingly divergent. At the end of the day each of those experiences has allowed me to develop a philosophy of leadership which lends itself to a high level of service to each person I touch.

2. What do you consider to be the greatest challenge as a leader of color?

The expectation (perceived or real) to be the absolute best at EVERYTHING and having little room for error. The opportunities to lead are so scarce, so when success is not clear and immediate, it lends itself to a stigma or stereotype, which has the potential to harm future progress..

3. What inspires and/or motivates you in your leadership journey?

The ability and capacity of our youth to change the world. Many of them just need a "nudge" in the right direction; a solid example before them; and/or a source of encouragement to reassure them of their ability to be great. I desire to be that person.

4. What is one piece of advice you have for aspiring leaders of color?

Be patient yet remain persistent. Stay humble, stay hungry and stay focused. (I know that is more like 2 - 5...LOL!)
