ULI report “Firebreak” explores strategies to help communities survive deadly wildfires

Environment

In 2020, the U.S. had its worst wildfire season on record with more than 8 million acres engulfed in flames, dozens killed and untold billions in property losses. With support from the Island Press Urban Resilience Project, the Urban Land Institute has released a new report, “Firebreak: Wildfire Resilience Strategies for Real Estate,” exploring best practices in building design and land use policy, managing vegetation, comprehensive and regional planning, and tenant and community engagement. Considering climate change is making the conditions for destructive fires more likely to occur, the report also details how real estate developers, urban planners and public leaders can implement resilience efforts to help communities thrive in the long run. This effort received funding support from the Kresge Foundation’s Environment Program.
